The New Constitution


Who is Ustad Mangu and why does he hate the English?
The new constitution is a fine story by Manto and Mangu is an eternal character depicted by him. The glimpses of this humorous and ironical character show the inborn feeling for freedom for every human being. Thus Mangu is evergreen character who represents not only the Indians but also the whole mankind. Mangu is a Tonga driver and his companions respect him for his knowledge and for his love of mother land. Sitting among his fellows he talks on the current affairs of the country and gives them latest information that he collects from the fares of his Tonga. People of every type travel by Tonga and they discuss various matters of common interest. There are students there are lawyers and other people belonging to different walk of life. While sitting in the Tonga they give their views on 1935 act of India this is to be enforced on 1st April. Mangu forms an opinion that his motherland will get freedom on that day. Mangu is the enemy of the gores as they are usurpers. Mangu is the lover of the liberty and he demands it on human grounds. Therefore his hatred for the British and hostility with them are based upon the reason and reality.
What hopes does Mangu from 1st April when the new constitution is to the promulgated.
Mangu is a sincere lover of freedom and he is a real freedom fighter. When Mangu come to know that the new constitution will be promulgated on 1st April his joys know no bounds. His becomes rapturous when he hears the students the lawyers and some other gentleman discuss the ins and outs of the new constitution. Mangu at this stage seems to be revolutionary and he hails this happy change with a warm heart, he is an optimist and he builds many glorious castles in the sweet air of liberty. All his desires and ambitions of freedom ____. Talk the shape of dreaming and he impatiently waits for the 1st April. On the sweet day he decorated his Tonga and enters the city with a hope of enjoying the celebration of the independents from Antalkali he moves to the Mall and then reaches the cantonment area. However the bells of new era are not ringing and he gradually touch the boundaries of frustration. Then new constitution is silent and suddenly Mangu catches sight of a gora soldier who gets angry at the demand of fare. Mangu beats him and reaches the jail. All his wishes are dashed to ground.
