What
impression does the writer get form the life of the poor people.
Breakfast is a simple story of village
workers who lead a peaceful life without being perturbed by the horrors of
future of the doubts of the coming events. They believe in the maxim cat drink
and are merry because tomorrow you will be no more. They make the most of the
present even when the black clouds of the great slum of 1929 are bowering over
them. These people are living in a tent and they are working in the fields of
cotton. The woman with her baby is working in home and she is performing her
domestic duties with great satisfaction. The little also seems to be peaceful
as it does not interfere with the mother’s work and silently goes on nursing.
Thus the whole atmosphere is pure peaceful and pleasing. The writer is deeply
impressed by the simplicity of the situation. Purity of living becomes the
central idea in his mind. The amazing fact is that the poor people have no
complaints against anyone. They live in the honest labour and God’s mercy. Thus
the story gives a message that real happiness lies in contentment faith on God
and fair feeling about the fellow being.

Abundance of wealth and plenty of needs disturb human life and they become
restless. All these point have been clarified through the simple story of
cotton pickers. Beside the gray tent an iron stove is burning and a young woman
dressed in cotton clothes is busy is cooking. She is taking a small baby in a
crocked arm and the baby is nestling it head under the waist. A young man comes
out to the tent and an old man follows him. They are dressed in new blue
dungarees. Their faces are sharp and they resemble in facial feature. Both have
stubble beards and are different in colour. They are quietly looking at the
lightening east and they warm their hands on the stove. They sit on the ground
and eat their breakfast happily. The old man thanks God through simple words,
