The story explains the theme of science and
human values in this world Hawthorne is a skilful short story writer who has
explained that science without humanism fails in its purpose of human uplift
and welfare. The story plainly tells us that science must serve man and man
should not be sacrifice at the altar of science. Rappaccini is a great
scientist who ignores all human values. He has mania of discovering a formula
of poison so that man may become immunise from all the poison. He grows all
kinds of herbs and flowers in his garden and carries out various experiments on
his beautiful daughter. Beatrice develop and tendency of killing everything.
That she touches or blows out of young student Giovanni falls a prey to her
love and tries to deposing her. She dies then and there. The tragedy of
Beatrice is really Dr Rappaccini is who ignores human values and wishes to make
that scientific at every cost.

her father and becomes poisonous. A young handsome student of South Italy comes
to Paddua University and stays in a room adjacent to Rappaccini garden. At
first sight he falls in love with Beatrice. Beatrice Prof. Baglioni who is a
close friend of Giovanni’s father is very kind to him. He tries to make
Giovanni’s understand the risky circumstances with are driving him to death.
But Giovanni refuse to hear any argument from his father’s friend. Finally
Prof. Baglioni gives him a vital of antidote for Beatrice. She drinks it from
the hand of her lover without any hesitation and dies instantly. Thus she dies
in the hands of her lover.
