It is an interesting
character essay. The writer tells about his maternal grandfather. His name was
William Pollex-fen and he lived at Sligo in Ireland. His grandfather was stout
and stern kind of old man. Yeats felt afraid of him though he was never unkind
to him and never spoke to him harshly. Everybody at home admired the
grandfather and felt afraid of him. Even the grandfather feared him. He was
lonely person as he had no brother or sister and every few friends him. The
grandfather often remained silent and reserved when he was in the army: he had
won the freedom of Spanish city. But he had never mentioned it to any body not
event to his wife. His family members learnt of his achievement through an old
friend who came to see him when he was of eighty years.
Yeats grandfather was a man of violent temper. He always kept a hatchet beside his bed at night to knock down any burglar who tries to break into the house. He liked to detail with law breakers himself instead of seeking the help of police. He was a man of strict discipline. The Meals at his house were served strictly at A.M. and 4P.M. nobody was allowed to eat anything in between Yeats grandfather was a man of great physical strength. He never ordered others to do a thing which he would not do himself. The Bible and Falconer, is shipwreck were his favourite books. He was a widely travelled man. He had visited many parts of the world.
