Significance of the old
man devotion to DiMaggio:
The old man and the sea is an adventure novel. The old man succeeds in hooking a big Marlin. The situation becomes more difficult when the Marlin decides to resist the struggle with the Marline continuous for two days and nights. During this time the old man gets tired.
But he does not think of giving up the struggle. But he does not think of giving up the struggle. Since he is all alone and unaided. He tries to boost up his moral in a new member of ways. He tries to get strength by reviving his past when he was young and physical robust. He recalls his historic hand game competition with the Negro from Cienfuegos.
Santiago defeated the black man after a nerve-breaking struggle of twenty four hours and won the title of champion. Then the old man remembered his hero Joe DiMaggio the great Yankee player of football.
This champion of baseball played neatly and skilfully in spite of a bone spur in his heel. Similarly the old man loves to dreams of lions on the African beaches.
As a boy he had seen these beautiful lions playing like cats on the beach in Africa. These lions are also a symbol of strength for the depressed old fisherman.
The boy is also a symbol of youth and physical vigour that has left him forever. Thus the past memories play an important role in the plot of the novel. They mitigate his sense of loneliness.
