The Old Man & the Sea
Character of the Manolin:
Manolin, the boy
is the second main character of the novel “The old man and the sea”. Santiago
is spiritually associated with the boy and remembers him on all occasions.
There is a devoted friendship between the old fisherman and the young boy whose parents ordered him to forsake the old fisherman and to sail away with lucky fisherman. But Manolin has full confidence in the skill and expertise of the old man. So, he proves a good companion and fast fried who assists Santiago in fishing and everyday matters.
The old man shares his experiences of seeing loins on the African beaches in his early boyhood. The boy also listens to the old man’s account of baseball matches with keen interest.
The Manolin’s devotion and attachment to old man is a supreme example of hero worship. Though, Manolin does not play an active part in the adventure of the old man. He is important of the atmosphere of the old man. He fulfils a vital emotional need and sympathy.
