The Old Man & the Sea
Santiago the old man occupies a prominent place in the
allegorical novel “The old man and the sea” like a heroic figure Santiago
remains self-confident, resolute and hopeful. He is fully determined to hunt and
kill the giant fish, Marlin. He tells the fish...............
“I will stay with you until I am dead”
Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same colour as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. The story of the novel deals with his struggle against a big fish and some sharks.
Santiago is omnipresent from the beginning till end. The old man is a weak, yet he has full confidence in his strength. He struggle against a huge fish Marlin for forty-eight hours without proper food and rest. He also fights bravely against the shark single without proper equipment. He is tired and exhausted.
He loses everything but he is not ready to accept defeat. He displays the qualities of courage, dignity, honour, dedication and endurance.
He is Hemingway’s code hero who illustrates the value of life that Hemingway loved all his life. Santiago is compassionate and major Christian virtues of compassion, humanity, piety, faith, hope and charity.
