Shaw has always stressed upon the people to
be realistic in their thinking and behaviour. He tries to falsify the popular
motions and established beliefs of the people.
In this essay he has criticised the
doctors for exploiting the ignorant people and adopting unscientific methods to
extort money from them. He tries to prove that doctors ignore the rule of
medical science and try to uphold their professional interests. According to
Shaw, doctoring is no longer a science.
It has become an art of entrapping
patients and earning money out of their distress. Shaw wants to prove that
there is no essential difference between the doctor and the quack. Both adopt
the same way in treating their patients. They only difference between the two
is that a doctor can sign death certificate, while a quack can not. There are
many quacks that become more popular among the people and earn for more than a
qualified doctor.
Shaw gives us the example of a lady who went to a doctor for
treatment of her mental depression. But the doctor gave her a medicine to boost
up her heart and she was nearly killed. Shaw says that the quacks herbalists,
bone setters and charmers are even the qualified doctor and adopt the same way
in the treatment of their patients.
