Character of the Sea

The Old Man & the Sea

Character of the Sea:

Hemingway has depicted the sea as a living character in the novel “The old man and the sea”. He has attributes many qualities of a man of the sea to prove it at living character. The hero of the novel always thinks of the sea as feminine virtues. The sea is a real character in the novel. It has its own relations with other characters of the novel.
It has its own sounds, tastes, colours, atmosphere and times. Sometimes it proves horrible and sometimes it is kind and gentle. The sea also plays a role of a good teacher in the novel.
It teaches the fishermen how to lead their life and earn their livelihood. The sea supplies livelihood to fishermen as a benevolent father. The sea is a full of various kinds of living creatures fish, turtles, gulls, sea weeds and snakes.
As a rule large creatures of the sea eat up small creatures. Only man catches fish much bigger than his own on the basis of the determination, resolution and intelligence.
